Several of my advisory students received progress reports like this. What are they thinking? A “D” requires so little effort, you almost have to exert extra effort to avoid the work required to receive an “F.”

But Why am I Failing?
Progress reports just went out and my colleagues and I are fielding frantic calls from parents and managing the onslaught of students suddenly concerned about their grades. We are all doing the same thing right now: justifying why the students are failing. Shouldn’t the students be explaining to their parents why they are failing? After all,teachers just enter the points without discrimination. Either the students do the work or they don’t…why must teachers explain themselves?
